Pattern: Three Generation Harlequin Star
Quilter: Jean (Shoemaker) Ayars

This is the 12th quilt on our website fashioned by Jean (Shoemaker) Ayars. Her husband, James Arthur Ayars, reports that "It's actually a 'Three Generation Quilt' -- my grandmother started it in 1939 while providing home-care for a dying uncle, Henry Siems. When he died, she folded up the assembled star pattern and put it away. Later she gave it to my mother, who worked on it, creating a partial border. But she also got busy and put it away for awhile. Last year, going through her things, she decided to give it to Jean, who has now finished it with the dentile borders and quilted hearts. Given the colors, we are calling it 'The Three Generation Harlequin Star Quilt.' It has  taken 73 years to complete. Jean is on the left; my mother Carleen Siems-Ayars is on the right. It is quite large -- 98 inches on each side.

Jim  is a descendant of Sarah Caroline (Minerd) Ayars of Otsego, MI.
