David Newton Devan (1856- ? ) was born on Oct. 22, 1856 in or near Hopwood, Fayette County, the son of John and Mary Ann (Minerd) Devan. Orphaned at about age 10, David was enrolled in the Soldiers' Orphan School in Uniontown, on Nov. 12, 1866. He and his brothers Sutton and George all lived at the school circa 1870. He was discharged on Oct. 22, 1872, and returned home to Hopwood, known as Monroe at the time. David is listed in the 1877 book Pennsylvania Soldier's Orphan Schools, by James Laughery Paul. His fate is lost to history.
