WHAT AM I BID? Throughout the United States and Canada, wearing his lucky cowboy hat, third generation auctioneer Sherman "Matthew" Hostetter is generating an international following for his calling skills. His wife Cassandra is the great-great granddaughter of the late Jacob and Minnie (Miner) Gary of Kingwood, Somerset County, PA. In November 2013, Matt captured top honors at the 2013 Canadian Western Agribition in Kenaston, Saskatchewan. The Agribition was an exhibition and tradeshow offering livestock sales, educational exhibits and agricultural technology. Its Winner’s Circle Auctioneering Competition featured three of the best championship winning auctioneers – Matt and two from Canada. Last summer, he ranked number nine in the world during the International Auctioneers Competition in Indianapolis, featuring the talents of more than 100 competitors in the men’s and women’s divisions, including auctioneers from Ireland, Canada, Mexico and South Africa. During the qualifying round, competitors were judged for their cadence, audience interaction and knowledge of products. The Top 15 finalists advanced to the finals, which began with a question and answer session with the judges and concluded with each auctioneer having a final turn at the microphone to auction three final items. In recognition, Matt has been featured in Pittsburgh Magazine as well as other news outlets. His firm, Sherman Hostetter Auctioneers of Beaver Falls, PA, manages on-site and online auctions specializing in real estate, business liquidations, estate and charitable benefits. As an auctioneer for Euro Auctions, he travels internationally each month to Ireland, England, Spain and the Philippines to serve as auctioneer for the heavy construction equipment industry.
