The late James Barry Hanshaw, M.D., was an accomplished physician, university educator and author. In addition to his professional achievements, he loves to paint peaceful landscape scenes using pastels. Among them are four examples seen on this page. While he had a lifelong love for art, he did not take lessons until the age of 61, at the urging of his wife Chris. He enrolled at the Worcester Art Museum School in Massachusetts, and took classes one night a week for 13 years. His first pastel paints were created in 1989. Since that time, he has had eight one-man shows, with about 65 of his works in private and institutional collections. "Art is my great passion," he wrote. Barry's late wife Chris was a classical pianist and on the music faculty of the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester. Barry was the grandson of Frank W. Hanshaw, Sr. Click for next artifact Copyright © 2006 Mark A. Miner. Photos by James Barry Hanshaw, M.D. |
