Brothers William Allen Miner and Harry Orlan Miner were talented woodworkers and carpenter-builders in Washington, PA. Harry is known to have built houses and office buildings in and around Washington. Will later moved to Southern California, where he was self-employed as a building contractor, and constructed "California Bungalow" houses. These two oaken boxes are believed to have been built by either Harry or Will, or both. The box in front was found in 1977 in the basement of Will's nephew, Odger Miner, in Aliquippa, PA. It was filled with Will's personal papers, and is thought to have been left behind when Will briefly resided in Odger's home circa 1946. The inside of the box is lined with paper. The outer edges of the lid were broken when re-discovered. The box in the background was used by Harry and his wife Armena (Cain) Miner to store postcards, letters and photographs. There is no lining inside the box. The wood is thinner and lighter than the box in the foreground. Click for next artifact Copyright © 2006 Mark A. Miner |
