Pattern: Checkerboard
Quilter: Ferne (Minerd) Work

This checkerboard quilt was crafted in the 1980s by the late Ferne (Minerd) Work of Mill Run, PA. She was the daughter of the late Albert "Ward" and Ada (Whipkey) Minerd, also of Mill Run. Ferne learned the craft from her mother, who not only made quilts but also created braided rugs which she sold and gave as gifts to loved ones.

Ferne made this quilt and others like it over the years for her two children and five grandchildren. She also made several baby quilts that have been given to great-grandchildren following her passing in 1997. Says her daughter Bonita (Work) Warrick, "Usually every winter in her later years she would put a quilt in the frames in a spare room and try to do one each winter. She would work on the tops during the rest of the year. Her hands were usually never idle as she sat down in the evenings after a hard day's work."

Bonita brought this quilt to the 2005 National Minerd-Minard-Miner-Minor Reunion, where it was photographed.
