This leaf pattern quilt was likely the last quilt made by the late Margaret (Kilgore) Minerd, wife of coal miner Frank Minerd of Fayette County, PA. She probably created it in the 1950s, judging from the cotton material used. It was a combination of machine and hand stitching and is likely the only one Maggie made from all store-bought material. The quilt would have been a prized possession as she and Frank had a difficult life in coal patch towns and did not have many luxuries. It features a white background with bright solid-colored leaves, and the back is light grey. The quilt measures approximately 76 inches x 94 inches. Maggie fashioned several other "crude crazy" quilts made from flour sacks, old wool coats and skirts. She was considered a "pioneer recycler" and her quilts were made to be functional rather than decorative. The Minerds' grandson, Richard A. Minerd and his wife Barbara, now have the quilt. It was used by their sons for many years for Boy Scout trips, and later tucked away for safekeeping. It was photographed at the 2005 National Minerd-Minard-Miner-Minor Reunion.
