Ulysses S. Bristol
(1872-1937)

Ulysses S. Bristol was born on Aug. 12, 1872 in Volinia, Cass County, MI or in Aug. 1876 in Constantine, St. Joseph County, MI, the son of Lemon W. and Rebecca (Ferguson) Bristol. He well could have been named for Civil War hero Ulysses S. Grant who was President of the United States the year our Ulysses was born.

He lived with his parents in Buchanan, Berrien County, MI in 1900 when the United States Census was taken, employed as a day laborer. In 1910, still single, he made his home with his widowed mother and sister Ellen in Buchanan on Portage Street. His occupation that year was as a laborer for a cabinet company.

In May 1926, when he was 50 years of age, Ulysses became the fourth husband of Eva May (James) Drake Mawhorter Burger (March 20, 1887-1962), an Iowa native who was the daughter of Sampson and Ella Viola "Lilly" (Clark) James. The wedding took place in South Bend, IN. Her first name also has been given as "Elva."

Eva May was divorced from her first husband James Marion Drake (1884-1943), whom she had married on Oct. 15, 1906 in Starke County, IN -- widowed from her second spouse, farmhand James Garfield Rupert Mawhorter (Nov. 30, 1881-1917), whom she had wed on Dec. 10, 1910 and who died from cirrhosis of the liver on May 6, 1917 -- and divorced from rubber factory laborer William L. Burger (1869- ? ), whom she had married on May 23, 1917 in Indiana. She thus brought at least five stepchildren into the union -- Cecil Veril Adam Burger, Lillian Viola (Drake) Musary, Homer A. Burger, Nora May (Mawhorter) Morley Fortner, James "Eugene" Burger and Bertha Clark,

The Bristols went on to produce a family of five children of their own -- Clarabelle Rebecca Baker O'Grady, Walter "Leaman" Bristol, Frank D. Bristol, Betty Lloyd and Ulysses Bristol. Sadly, son Ulysses died in childbirth in September 1926.

The 1930 federal census enumeration shows the family residing in Buchanan, Berrien County, MI. Ulysses earned a living at that time as a carpenter. Their final home together was west of Buchanan.

Heartache struck the family on April 21, 1937 when Ulysses passed away of bronchial pneumonia in Berrien Center, MI at the age of 64. Rev. Thomas Rice, of the local Methodist Episcopal Church, led the funeral rites. Burial followed in Oak Ridge Cemetery. An obituary was published in the South Bend (IN) Tribune.

His death left his wife of 11 years to raise their younger children.

Eva survived her husband by a quarter of a century. She made her home along Route 1 near Buchanan.

She died at her home in rural Buchanan on Nov. 1, 1962. She was laid to eternal rest in the Oak Ridge Cemetery.

~ Stepson Cecil Veril Adam Burger ~

Stepson Cecil Veril Adam Burger (1905-1969) was born on April 8, 1905 in Wyatt, IN, the son of William and Martha (?) Burger.

Cecil grew up in Mishawaka. He was age 12 when his father married Eva May (James) Drake Mawhorter and then age 22 when Eva in turn wed Ulysses S. Bristol. He is known to have served in the U.S. Armed Forces from 1925 to 1928.

He lived for a number of years in Plymouth, IN in young manhood, where he married his first wife, Mary Inez Cunningham (1911-1950).

The Burgers are believed to have borne a son, Cecil Deverl Burger.

For 37 years, Cecil was employed by Studebaker's Laundry and later by F.W. Means Laundry.

She died on Aug. 6, 1950 in Tyner, IN, at the age of 39. Burial followed in Oak Hill Cemetery in Plymouth.

Mishawaka's railroad depot, early 1900s

Cecil wed his second bride, Hazel Geraldine (Mentzel) Kryski (Dec. 28, 1910-1986), on Aug. 22, 1952. She had been married before to John J. Kryske (1904-1984) and brought nine stepchildren into the second union -- Eugene D. Kryski, Ray Nelson Kryski, Jerry D. Kryski, Robert G. Kryski, Leo N. Kryski, Sgt. James W. Kryski, Esther Mae Vida, Mrs. Steve Vida and Nancy Jane Runnels Burks.

Their home place in the 1960s was 602 Brook Avenue, Mishawaka. They endured the heartache of the death of son Leo in Vietnam in 1968.

Sadly, having been diagnosed with lung cancer, Cecil passed away in St. Joseph's Hospital at the age of 74 on May 5, 1969. An obituary was printed in the South Bend Tribune, which named his surviving sisters as Martha Truax of Tyner, IN and Edith Wickizer of Mishawaka. Rev. Thomas C. Rough, pastor of the Central United Methodist Church, led the funeral rites. Burial was under the sod of Bremen Cemetery.

Hazel lived for another 17 years as a widow. The angel of death spirited her away on Dec. 19, 1986.

Son Cecil Deverl Burger (1931-2018) was born on May 10, 1931 in Plymouth, IN, the son of Cecil and Mary Inez (Cunningham) Berger. He was united in matrimony twice. His first bride was Wilma Joy Whitesell (Feb. 6, 1932-1998), a native of Donaldson, IN. The trio of offspring of this marriage were Michael D. Burger, Larry Burger and Reva DeFranco. Their marriage ended in divorce by 1957, and Wilma wed again to Willard Whitesell. Cecil's second union was with Margaret Elizabeth "Peg" McClane (1929-2002), originally from Gary, IN. She is thought to have brought a stepson into the second family, Dennis Mullenhour. They went on to bear two more children -- Richard Burger and Candice Marie Culpepper. The pair lived in Atlanta in 1969 and settled in Columbia, AL in later years. Sadly, Margaret passed into the arms of the angels at age 73 on July 16, 2002. Cecil outlived her by 16 years. At the age of 87, Cecil died at the Bridge in Columbia on Nov. 13, 2018. Interment was in Polk Memorial Gardens.

  • Grandson Michael D. Burger (1950-2012) was born on Nov. 1, 1950. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Michael tied the marital cord with Marilyn Firestone ( ? - ? ). A pair of sons in this family were Ryan Burger and Robert Burger. They made a dwelling-place in St. Charles, MI in 1998. Sadly, at the age of 61, he died on Jan. 13, 2012. In an obituary, the family requested that any memorial donations be made to the American Cancer Society.

    Great-grandson Ryan Burger wed Jessica.

    Great-grandson Robert Burger married Jennifer.

  • Grandson Larry Burger ( ? - ? ) was in Elkhart, IN in 1998.
  • Grandson Rick Burger married Kelly.
  • Step-grandson Dennis Mullenhour ( ? - ? )

Stepson Eugene Dale Kryski (1928-2011) was born on Oct. 7, 1928 in St. Joseph, IN. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War including a post to Korea. After a three-year term concluded, he re-enlisted for a second hitch. He was in Mishawaka, IN in 1969 and in Michigan in 2010. Research shows that he was wed on Nov. 18, 1956 to Shirley Jean Kaufman (June 17, 1937-1994), daughter of Philip Henry and Stella Ann (Kalmer) Kaufman. Their nuptials took place in St. Joseph County. Two sons produced by their union were Rocco E. Kryski and Mark P. Kryski. Said the South Bend Tribune, Shirley was employed for 28 years by CTS Corporation in Elkhart and was a member of its Quarter Century Club. The pair eventually separated. Shirley made her home in the mid-1990s at 14291 Eureka Avenue, Mishawaka. She died at the age of 56, in Memorial Hospital, on Feb. 5, 1994. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery. Eugene was not named in her obituary. Death swept over him in Elkhart, IN on May 19, 2011.

  • Step-grandson Rocco Eugene Kryski is believed to have been joined in marriage with Colleen ( ? - ? ). Two known children in this family are Susan Kryski and Rocco Kryski Jr. Circa 1983, he was elected a captain of the Penn South Fire Department township volunteers and in time became a battalion chief. He made his home in Mishawaka, IN in 1994 and was named in numerous news stories over the years in connection with his firefighting. He was succeeded as chief in 1997 by Tim Woodruff. Their daughter Susan at age 16 was critically injured in a June 1997 notor accident when a minivan in which she was riding overturned on the Indiana Toll Road, receiving head injuries and a punctured lung.
  • Step-grandson Mark P. Kryski is thought to have been united in wedlock with Shauna Mauzey ( ? - ? ), daughter of Paul James and Gayle (Greenwell) Mauzey. They lived in Granger, IN in the 1985 to 1988 timeframe. Children of this union were Paula Kryski, Elizabeth Kryski, Jennifer Kryski, Phillip Kryski and perhaps others. The couple divorced, with Shauna becoming a companion of Tom Basham. Mark has since relocated to Las Vegas.

Great-granddaughter Paula Kryski and Joseph Schirf Sr. produced a daughter, Alexis Marie Kryski Schirf. Other offspring in the family were Shaun Kryski, Ollievya Kryski and perhaps others. They dwelled in Mishawaka. Their daughter Alexis (Sept. 5, 2002-2022) was born in South Bend, was a 2020 graduate of Penn High School and wrestled in state competition. Said an obituary, she "possessed a sweet and compassionate soul, ...enjoyed caring for animals and children and was known as a mother hen to the little ones in her life. She had been undecided on becoming a NICU nurse or a Vet while considering college courses. Alexis enjoyed dressing up for special occasions but also loved to be comfy with her array of blankies and comfy clothes, ... [and she] reflected in her love of all things Stitch from the Disney movie Lilo & Stitch." Alexis was the mother of twin babies who died in infancy. Sadly, at the age of 19, Alexis died on Feb. 26, 2022.

    Great-granddaughter Elizabeth Kryski

    Great-granddaughter Jennifer Kryski

    Great-granddaughter Phillip Kryski

Stepson Ray "Nelson" Kryski (1934-2010) was born on Sept. 20, 1934 in Mishawaka. Dr. F.W. Logan assisted in the birth. He seems to have spent his entire life in his hometown. In June 1957, at the age of 22, he won a heat race during a Father's Day Sweepstakes motor race at Playland Park Speedway. He was married and the father of a child born in mid-May 1957, but the union appears to have ended by 1959, when he advertised in the South Bend Tribune that he would not be responsible for debts contracted by anyone other than himself. Then at the age of 28, on Sept. 1, 1962, he married 37-year-old Lila Rose (Wharton) Brumbaugh (Jan. 25, 1925-2011), daughter of Wesley and Ella Mae (Duckelberger) Wharton. She brought a stepson to the second family, Wesley Brumbaugh. A child was born to the Kryskis in South Bend's Osteopathic Hospital in Oct. 1963, believed to have been Kellie Lannoo. The second marriage also dissolved in divorce. Nelson resided in Mishawaka in the 1990s and died there on Nov. 21, 2010. Former wife Lila supported herself as a laborer in the field of manufacturing. She is known to have made her final home in South Bend. Burdened with severe dementia, she died at the age of 86, in Morningside Nursing and Memory Care Center, on New Year's Day 2011. Cremation took place, and her obituary appeared in the Tribune.

  • Step-step-grandson Wesley Brumbaugh (1942- ? ) is thought to have been born around 1942. He dwelled in Mishawaka in 2011 and signed his mother's Indiana certificate of death. Is he the same Wesley Carl Brumbaugh who was married to Constance C. and Barbara L. and circa 1970 operated an adult book store in South Bend? If so he was arrested in 1970 and underwent trial in 1971 and 1972 on charges of operating a nuisance business. Children of this family are believed to be Kim Toombs, Vince Sixx, Chris Bogart, Cindy Holcomb, Carl Brumbaugh, Tim Brunbaugh and Tony Brumbaugh.

Step-step-great-granddaughter Cynthia wed Charles Holcomb. Their daughter Ashley N. Holcomb sadly died at birth on Dec. 4, 1991 at Memorial Hospital in South Bend.

  • Step-granddaughter Kellie Kryski (1963?- ? ) is believed to have been born in Oct. 1963 in Osteopathic Hospital in South Bend. This needs to be confirmed. Evidence suggests she married (?) Lannoo and settled in Mishawaka.  They are the parents of Nikki Lannoo.

Stepson Jerry David Kryski is believed to have joined the U.S. Armed Forces and trained at Fort Detrick in 1960. He made his home circa 1969 in Mishawaka. His first wife is believed to have been Donna J. ( ? - ? ). One known daughter of the couple was Nancy Jane Kryski. The marriage ended in divorce by 1993, with Donna marrying again to Richard L. Mason. He entered into marriage with Sandi ( ? - ? ). Their home in 2010 was in Union, MI. He was still living when named in the news obituary of his sister Esther in 2014.

  • Step-granddaughter Nancy Jane Kryski was a 1991 alumna of Penn High School in Mishawaka and Elkhart Area Career Center. On May 1, 1993, she wed Brian Lee Souza ( ? - ? ), son of Randal Souza, in nuptials held in the Christian Center of South Bend. The happy couple was pictured in the South Bend Tribune. Brian was a graduate of Satellite High School of Satellite Beach, FL. In time she married again to (?) Carriveau ( ? - ? ).

Stepson Robert Joseph Kryski (1938-1997) was born on Feb. 5, 1938 in Mishawaka. He lived in his hometown in the late 1960s. Evidence suggests that he is the same "Robert J. Kryski" of Mishawaka who, at age 33 in 1970, pleaded guilty "to charges of soliciting a minor for immoral purposes," reported the Niles (MI) Daily Star. "He was arrested Wednesday at Jones and accused of picking up a 16-year-old Cassopolis boy who was hitchhiking..." By 1986, he had moved to Michigan and at the end he was living in Union, MI. He succumbed to the spectre of death on Sept. 16, 1997.

There, he trained in the Army's Golden Knights parachute team and took part in the 1967 National Parachuting Championships held at Tahlequah, OK and another competition in Zephyrhills, FL in January 1968. Leo was pictured in news stories in March 1968 when he helped television talk-show personality Mike Douglas to don a jumpsuit and release his chute prior to a jump. The resulting footage is believed to have been used in a special Armed Forces Day program airing in early May of that year. In all, he took part in 2,830 freefall jumps in training and competition. In late May 1968, Leo was deployed to Vietnam. Tragedy shook the family when Leo, on duty in Bģnh Šinh, was killed by sniper fire on Aug. 25, 1968. The horrific event was published in newspapers across the country. The body was returned to Nashville, TN where funeral services were held at Nashville National Cemetery. The grieving mother traveled from South Bend to Nashville. The widowed Loretta lived for another 47 years and married again to MSgt. Joel Oliver Turner Sr. (1916-2003).  Said an obituary, "She spent several years working in data processing positions for civil service including Ft. Campbell and Ft. Bragg. Musary and Joyce Potter. The eldest of their children was born when Lillian was 15 years of age.

Circa 1943, John contracted a serious illness and suffered for the remaining four years of his life. He died at home at the age of 48 on (?) 1947. Burial was in Mishawaka's Fairview Cemetery. Just eight months later, the widowed Lillian delivered their youngest daughter in St. Joseph Hospital.

Busy Lincolnway in Mishawaka

Daughter Lulabell Catherine Musary (1922-2021) was born on March 11, 1922 in Mishawaka, IN. In childhood she attended St. Joseph's School. She was married twice. Her first spouse, whom she wed at age 19 on April 13, 1940, was 20-year-old construction worker Leonard Leroy Beach (1923-1991). He was a native of Nichols, IA and the son of Albert Leroy and Verda Velma (Turner) Beach and stepson of Tony Rodriguez of Muscatine. Officiating was justice of the peace J.C. Coster. Offspring of the first marriage were Albert Beach, Irene Loretta Beach, Verda R. Chapman and Mary Ellen Beach. The Beaches resided in Muscatine, IA in 1940, where Leonard made a living that year as a road construction laborer. By 1942, they moved to Lulabell's hometown of Mishawaka at the address of 3412½ Lincolnway East. Grief blanketed the family at the infant deaths of daughter Irene (from malnutrition and convulsions at age three months on Oct. 10, 1940) and Mary Ellen (born prematurely, with inflammation of the small intestine, died at two months, 19 days on July 20, 1942). The first marriage crumbled in divorce. Albert was awarded custody of their two living children and moved into his parents' home in Muscatine, working for a counter factory as a buffer and polisher. On April 29, 1943, Lulabell tied the marital cord with widower Lawrence Matthew O'Banion ( ? - ? ). His first wife Nora Anne Hagadorn (1923-1942) had died the year before in an automobile collision, and he thus brought a stepson into the combined family, Lawrence O. O'Banion. They went on to bear seven more children of their own -- Nora Kinas, Margaret Kinas, Bob O'Banion, Terry O'Banion, Deloris VanDusen, Beatrice Coleman and Elizabeth Moyer. As of 1947, the family was in Rolling Prairie, IN and in 1950 in Warren, IN, with Lawrence employed as a repairman with a sewing machine company. Lulabell was an active member and volunteer with the La Porte Assembly of God, giving of her time as a leader of the Senior Adult Ministries. Said an obituary, she "had a gift of hospitality, both within the church and outside [and]  was often affectionately referred to as the 'party animal of the church'! Lulabell enjoyed crocheting, completing puzzles, dancing, flowers, bird watching, and the color blue. She also enjoyed and was skilled at making homemade chicken and noodles." Lawrence passed away on July 31, 1983 at the age of 60. Lulabell outlived him by almost four decades. During that time she endured the untimely deaths of her daughter Verda, stepson Lawrence, daughters-in-law Joanne O'Banion and Ann O'Banion and sons-in-law Floyd W. VanDusen and Robert E. Kinas. Death swept her away at the age of 99, in Rolling Prairie, on April 21, 2021. Pastor Jeff Hines led the funeral rites. Her remains sleep for the ages in Mount Pleasant Cemetery in South Bend, IN. The headcount of her survivors at death was 23 grandchildren and 47 great-grandchildren.

Together, they bore a duo of children -- Carl Alfred Chapman and Ruth Chapman. Verda sued for divorce in 1967 and again in 1970, as reported in the Muscatine Journal, but they may have reconciled. Sadly, at the age of 60, Carl died in Muscatine General Hospital on Jan. 30, 1999. An obituary was published in the Journal. Rev. Dan Robbs, pastor of Sycamore Baptist Church, presided over the funeral rites, with interment following in Greenwood Cemetery. Verda outlived her spouse and endured the untimely death of her son Carl in 2006. She was deceased by 2021.

Great-grandson Carl Alfred Chapman (1965-2006) was born on July 13, 1965 in Muscatine, IA. He spent his life in the town of his birth. Sadly, after what the Muscatine Journal called "a long illness," died died at the age of 41 on Oct. 11, 2006. His remains were cremated.

Great-granddaughter Ruth Chapman dwelled in 1999 in Muscatine.

  • Step-grandson Lawrence Matthew O'Banion Jr. (1942-2015) was born on March 23, 1942 in South Bend. His mother was killed when he was just three months old, following a collision after her car had run out of gasoline and was being pushed by the father. She had enough presence of mind in the moment to "toss" her infant son to safety. On Feb. 3, 1961, when he was 18 years of age, he entered into the sanctity of marriage with Diana Lee Sellers (June 4, 1944-2012), daughter of Lloyd and Marvis (Smith) Sellers. The four sons produced by this union were Dennis O'Banion, Lawrence O'Banion III, David O'Banion Sr. and Mark Allen O'Banion Sr. After a divorce, he married again on May 3, 1975 to widow Mary Ann (Frazier) Rhinesmith (Dec. 11, 1934-2017), daughter of Joseph and Mary (Lootens) Fraiser. Her first husband Raymond Rhinesmith had died in 1974, and she brought four stepchildren into the new family -- Raymond David Rhinesmith, Pamela Connor, Dennis Rhinesmith and Brian Rhinesmith. They resided for decades in South Bend. Lawrence was cleaved away by the angel of death in South Bend's Memorial Hospital, at the age of 73, on May 10, 2015. His remains sleep in eternal repose in Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Survivors included a baker's dozen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Mary Ann lived for another two years. Death enveloped her at the age of 82 on June 12, 2017. Her funeral was presided over by Pastor William Wildey, and an obituary appeared in the South Bend Tribune. Former wife Diana married again to (?) Morrison, lived in Mishawaka and produced additional children. She died in Mishawaka at the age of 67 on May 26, 2012.

Great-grandson David O'Banion Sr. resided in Mishawaka in 2012.

Great-grandson Mark Allen O'Banion Sr. (1971-1990) was born on Oct. 16, 1971 in Mishawaka. On Jan. 25, 1990, at the age of 18, he was married to Elizabeth Rose ( ? - ? ). He was the father of Mark Allen O'Banion Jr. and Matthew Allen O'Banion. Their dwelling-place was at the corner of Lincoln Way West and South 25th Street. Stepdaughter Elnora May "Nora" Mawhorter (1913-1978) was born the day after Christmas 1913 in Mishawaka, IN. She also carried a maiden or alternative name of "Rupert."

She was wed twice.

Her first husband, whom she married when she was age 16, on Dec. 26, 1928, was 26-year-old William "David" Morley (1903-1957), a native of Galena, MI and the son of William H. and Elizabeth Morley. The nuptials were conducted in South Bend.

The pair made their home in Buchanan in 1930-1937 and were the parents of Henry David Morley, James Arthur Morley Sr., Henry Morley, Francis Morley and Sandra Younger.

When the federal census enumeration was made in 1930, David was employed as a machine operator for a brake shoe factory in Buchanan. The family address in 1957 was 213 Fulton Street, Buchanan.  They belonged to the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Grieving covered the family when, at age 53, David suffered a heart attack and died at home on New Year's Day 1957.

Her second spouse, with whom she tied the knot on Nov. 19, 1959, in Scottdale, MI, was D.C. Fortner (1924-1999). Circa 1961-1976, they lived in Berrien Springs/Berrien Center, MI.

Nora died in Berrien on June 5, 1978. The remains were lowered under the sod of Galien Township Cemetery in Berrien County.

D.C. lived for another 21 years. He passed away in 1999.

Son Henry David Morley (1930-1999) was born on May 21, 1930 in Buchanan, MI. He had three known wives. The first was Beverly J. Goodrich (1933- ? ), daughter of Royal and Hazel (Ruple) Goodrich, whom he wed on July 28, 1950 in Buchanan. Five years later, on May 21, 1955, in Shawneetown, IL or Kentucky (sources differ), he tied the marital cord with Frances Ann Rippel (Aug. 19, 1920-1968), originally from Chicago and a resident of Walkerton, IN. As of 1957, their home remained in Walkerton, and she was active in a number of civic and church organizations. Sadly, Frances was stricken by a heart attack at home at age 48 and passed away on Nov. 20, 1968 after a baker's dozen years of marriage. An obituary in the South Bend Tribune said that Rev. M.E. Reinke, of St. John's Lutheran Church, led the funeral rites, followed by burial in Salem Chapel Cemetery. Henry's third bride, with whom he exchanged vows on Aug. 7, 1971, in New Buffalo, was Norma Lee Bennitt (1937- ? ). In all, he fathered eight known children -- Henry D. Morley Jr., Christine Heeg, Norma Lee, Janyll Lott, Jaye Sue Morgan, Mark VanDusen, Sherman Euler and Michael VanDusen. His four stepchildren were Joyce Bradley, June Ripple, JoAnn Trapp and James Pulaski. Circa 1978, they dwelled at Three Oaks, MI and in 1982 relocated to Berrien Springs, MI, where they spent the final 17 years of their lives together. He was employed for 18 years as a laborer with the Berrien County Road Commission. He was a founding member of the Fish Lake Fire Department and Fish Lake Lions Club. He surrendered to the angel of death at home at the age of 68 on Jan. 26, 1999. The Benton Harbor Herald-Palladium printed an obituary. Interment was under the sod of Olive Chapel Cemetery, New Castle, IN, led by Pastor Jeff Bradley.

  • Granddaughter Janyll Rae Morley ( ? - ? ) was born on (?). She attended River Valley High School. On Aug. 28, 1976, she entered into marriage with Ted Dennis Lott ( ? - ? ). The two children they produced together were Ted Dennis Lott Jr. and Amanda J. Lott. Their extended family of 10 dwelled in an old farmhouse along Hudson Road in Galien, MI in 1999. They were plunged into heartache in November 1999 when their house and nearly all of their possessions were destroyed in a fire. The community rallied around them and provided donations of money and furniture as well as a place to stay in a trailer, as documented in a Nov. 19, 1999 article in the South Bend Tribune. Tragedy again struck in September 2001 when Ted Sr. and Ted Jr. went hunting in northern La Porte County and father accidentally shot and killed the son, thinking he was a squirrel.

Great-grandson Ted Dennis Lott Jr. (1978-2001) was born on Jan. 21, 1978.  He was united in matrimony with Regina K. Eikelberg ( ? - ? ). She brought a stepson to the marriage, Robert A. Eikelberg. Other offspring in the combined family were Karalyne R. Aldridge and Ted Dennis Lott III. They made a home on Hudson Lake Road in Galien, IN. On the fateful day of Sept. 22, 2001, Ted Jr. went hunting with his father on private land near Hudson Lake along County Roads 1000 North and 850 East, near New Carlisle. Mistaking the son for a squirrel, possibly as part of a series of pranks by the son, the father aimed and fired his gun, striking the son in the head and killing him. His obituary was published in the South Bend Tribune.

Great-granddaughter Amanda J. Lott made her home in Galien, IN in 2001.

Then on Sept. 21, 1956, at the age of 23, he tied the knot with Loretta Phiscator (May 30, 1938-1984), daughter of Mildred Phiscator. They resided La Porte, MI and were the parents of James Arthur Morley Jr., Cindy Morley, Becky Morley, Vicki Morley, Lori Morley and Jany Morley. James earned a living as a floorman for Buchanan Steel Products. They held a membership in the Faith United Methodist Church. The marriage was troubled, and the couple separated in March 1976, with him living on Oak Forrest Road and her on Buffalo Road, shared with another man. On the fateful night of Aug. 11, 1976, Loretta went to James' residence and a fight broke out. She then left and drove home, with him following. There they got into another altercation. She pointed a 12-gauge shotgun in his direction and pulled the trigger. The blast hit him in the chest, killing him instantly. His body was found inside the rear door of her dwelling. Funeral services were led by his pastor, Rev. Kenneth Snow. Burial was in Oak Ridge Cemetery, with the tragedy covered on the pages of the Niles (MI) Daily Star. Loretta lived for another eight years as a widow, at an address on Chamberlain Road. She died at the age of 45, at Buchanan's Unity Hospital, on March 14, 1984. The happy event was announced in the Benton Harbor Herald-Palladium, which said that the bride wore a street-length princess dress of simulated lace with a short jacket of lace. A crown of white flowers and seed pearls held her elbow-length veil of silk illusion. She carried a bouquet of white carnations centered with pink sweetheart roses." Sharon also was an alum of Buchanan High and is known to have attended Asbury College in Wilmore, KY. At the time of marriage, she was employed by the Haven Hubbard Memorial Home. A pair of offspring produced by the couple were Michael Anthony Morley and Lynnette Janovsky. Paramedics were called and a combination of cardiopulmomary resuscitation techniques brought him back. His mother was quoted in a South Bend Tribune story, saying her church congregation began praying even before he was brought to consciousness. Less than two months later, in mid-December 2010, he returned to work. His miraculous recovery was short-lived. He appears to have suffered another life-threatening incident and was admitted to Lakeland Community Hospital in Niles, where he died at the age of 45 on April 14, 2011. The funeral was held in the Church of the Nazarene, and burial in Oak Ridge Cemetery. The Tribune ran an obituary.

Stepson James "Eugene" Burger Bristol (1920-2003) was born on Jan. 30, 1920 in Mishawaka, IN.

He was five years of age when his mother married Ulysses S. Bristol, and used the "Bristol" name at times over the years. He is known to have generated income as a young man, working as a junk dealer with his residence in Niles, MI.

At the age of 21, on Jan. 29, 1943, Eugene was joined in wedlock with 18-year-old Lena Bertha Bernhardt (Nov. 5, 1924-2014), daughter of Levial and Sadie (Haas) Bernhardt and a native of Van Buren County, MI. Presiding over the nuptials was Rev. Floyd W. Johnston of the First Baptist Church. On his marriage license application, he used the "Bristol" name.

They made their home in Niles, MI and became the parents of a son, James E. Bristol Watterson.

Evidence suggests that the couple divorced and that Lena married twice more, to Vernon Charles Staton (1919-1968) and John Ercel Walton (1900-1972).

Son James Edward Bristol Watterson (1944-2003) was born on Aug. 3, 1944 in Jackson County, MI. He may have been placed for adoption as in 1950, at age five, he was living with John P. and Helen J.
