Ulysses S. Bristol was born on Aug. 12, 1872 in Volinia, Cass County, MI or in Aug. 1876 in Constantine, St. Joseph County, MI, the son of Lemon W. and Rebecca (Ferguson) Bristol. He well could have been named for Civil War hero Ulysses S. Grant who was President of the United States the year our Ulysses was born. He lived with his parents in Buchanan, Berrien County, MI in 1900 when the United States Census was taken, employed as a day laborer. In 1910, still single, he made his home with his widowed mother and sister Ellen in Buchanan on Portage Street. His occupation that year was as a laborer for a cabinet company. In May 1926, when he was 50 years of age, Ulysses became the fourth husband of Eva May (James) Drake Mawhorter Burger (March 20, 1887-1962), an Iowa native who was the daughter of Sampson and Ella Viola "Lilly" (Clark) James. The wedding took place in South Bend, IN. Her first name also has been given as "Elva." Eva May was divorced from her first husband James Marion Drake (1884-1943), whom she had married on Oct. 15, 1906 in Starke County, IN -- widowed from her second spouse, farmhand James Garfield Rupert Mawhorter (Nov. 30, 1881-1917), whom she had wed on Dec. 10, 1910 and who died from cirrhosis of the liver on May 6, 1917 -- and divorced from rubber factory laborer William L. Burger (1869- ? ), whom she had married on May 23, 1917 in Indiana. She thus brought at least five stepchildren into the union -- Cecil Veril Adam Burger, Lillian Viola (Drake) Musary, Homer A. Burger, Nora May (Mawhorter) Morley Fortner, James "Eugene" Burger and Bertha Clark, The Bristols went on to produce a family of five children of their own -- Clarabelle Rebecca Baker O'Grady, Walter "Leaman" Bristol, Frank D. Bristol, Betty Lloyd and Ulysses Bristol. Sadly, son Ulysses died in childbirth in September 1926.
The 1930 federal census enumeration shows the family residing in Buchanan, Berrien County, MI. Ulysses earned a living at that time as a carpenter. Their final home together was west of Buchanan. Heartache struck the family on April 21, 1937 when Ulysses passed away of bronchial pneumonia in Berrien Center, MI at the age of 64. Rev. Thomas Rice, of the local Methodist Episcopal Church, led the funeral rites. Burial followed in Oak Ridge Cemetery. An obituary was published in the South Bend (IN) Tribune. His death left his wife of 11 years to raise their younger children. Eva survived her husband by a quarter of a century. She made her home along Route 1 near Buchanan. She died at her home in rural Buchanan on Nov. 1, 1962. She was laid to eternal rest in the Oak Ridge Cemetery. ~ Stepson Cecil Veril Adam Burger ~ Stepson Cecil Veril Adam Burger (1905-1969) was born on April 8, 1905 in Wyatt, IN, the son of William and Martha (?) Burger. Cecil grew up in Mishawaka. He was age 12 when his father married Eva May (James) Drake Mawhorter and then age 22 when Eva in turn wed Ulysses S. Bristol. He is known to have served in the U.S. Armed Forces from 1925 to 1928. He lived for a number of years in Plymouth, IN in young manhood, where he married his first wife, Mary Inez Cunningham (1911-1950). The Burgers are believed to have borne a son, Cecil Deverl Burger. For 37 years, Cecil was employed by Studebaker's Laundry and later by F.W. Means Laundry. She died on Aug. 6, 1950 in Tyner, IN, at the age of 39. Burial followed in Oak Hill Cemetery in Plymouth.
Cecil wed his second bride, Hazel Geraldine (Mentzel) Kryski (Dec. 28, 1910-1986), on Aug. 22, 1952. She had been married before to John J. Kryske (1904-1984) and brought nine stepchildren into the second union -- Eugene D. Kryski, Ray Nelson Kryski, Jerry D. Kryski, Robert G. Kryski, Leo N. Kryski, Sgt. James W. Kryski, Esther Mae Vida, Mrs. Steve Vida and Nancy Jane Runnels Burks. Their home place in the 1960s was 602 Brook Avenue, Mishawaka. They endured the heartache of the death of son Leo in Vietnam in 1968. Sadly, having been diagnosed with lung cancer, Cecil passed away in St. Joseph's Hospital at the age of 74 on May 5, 1969. An obituary was printed in the South Bend Tribune, which named his surviving sisters as Martha Truax of Tyner, IN and Edith Wickizer of Mishawaka. Rev. Thomas C. Rough, pastor of the Central United Methodist Church, led the funeral rites. Burial was under the sod of Bremen Cemetery. Hazel lived for another 17 years as a widow. The angel of death spirited her away on Dec. 19, 1986. Son Cecil Deverl Burger (1931-2018) was born on May 10, 1931 in Plymouth, IN, the son of Cecil and Mary Inez (Cunningham) Berger. He was united in matrimony twice. His first bride was Wilma Joy Whitesell (Feb. 6, 1932-1998), a native of Donaldson, IN. The trio of offspring of this marriage were Michael D. Burger, Larry Burger and Reva DeFranco. Their marriage ended in divorce by 1957, and Wilma wed again to Willard Whitesell. Cecil's second union was with Margaret Elizabeth "Peg" McClane (1929-2002), originally from Gary, IN. She is thought to have brought a stepson into the second family, Dennis Mullenhour. They went on to bear two more children -- Richard Burger and Candice Marie Culpepper. The pair lived in Atlanta in 1969 and settled in Columbia, AL in later years. Sadly, Margaret passed into the arms of the angels at age 73 on July 16, 2002. Cecil outlived her by 16 years. At the age of 87, Cecil died at the Bridge in Columbia on Nov. 13, 2018. Interment was in Polk Memorial Gardens.
Stepson Eugene Dale Kryski (1928-2011) was born on Oct. 7, 1928 in St. Joseph, IN. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War including a post to Korea. After a three-year term concluded, he re-enlisted for a second hitch. He was in Mishawaka, IN in 1969 and in Michigan in 2010. Research shows that he was wed on Nov. 18, 1956 to Shirley Jean Kaufman (June 17, 1937-1994), daughter of Philip Henry and Stella Ann (Kalmer) Kaufman. Their nuptials took place in St. Joseph County. Two sons produced by their union were Rocco E. Kryski and Mark P. Kryski. Said the South Bend Tribune, Shirley was employed for 28 years by CTS Corporation in Elkhart and was a member of its Quarter Century Club. The pair eventually separated. Shirley made her home in the mid-1990s at 14291 Eureka Avenue, Mishawaka. She died at the age of 56, in Memorial Hospital, on Feb. 5, 1994. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery. Eugene was not named in her obituary. Death swept over him in Elkhart, IN on May 19, 2011.
Stepson Ray "Nelson" Kryski (1934-2010) was born on Sept. 20, 1934 in Mishawaka. Dr. F.W. Logan assisted in the birth. He seems to have spent his entire life in his hometown. In June 1957, at the age of 22, he won a heat race during a Father's Day Sweepstakes motor race at Playland Park Speedway. He was married and the father of a child born in mid-May 1957, but the union appears to have ended by 1959, when he advertised in the South Bend Tribune that he would not be responsible for debts contracted by anyone other than himself. Then at the age of 28, on Sept. 1, 1962, he married 37-year-old Lila Rose (Wharton) Brumbaugh (Jan. 25, 1925-2011), daughter of Wesley and Ella Mae (Duckelberger) Wharton. She brought a stepson to the second family, Wesley Brumbaugh. A child was born to the Kryskis in South Bend's Osteopathic Hospital in Oct. 1963, believed to have been Kellie Lannoo. The second marriage also dissolved in divorce. Nelson resided in Mishawaka in the 1990s and died there on Nov. 21, 2010. Former wife Lila supported herself as a laborer in the field of manufacturing. She is known to have made her final home in South Bend. Burdened with severe dementia, she died at the age of 86, in Morningside Nursing and Memory Care Center, on New Year's Day 2011. Stepson Robert Joseph Kryski (1938-1997) was born on Feb. 5, 1938 in Mishawaka. He lived in his hometown in the late 1960s. Evidence suggests that he is the same "Robert J. Kryski" of Mishawaka who, at age 33 in 1970, pleaded guilty "to charges of soliciting a minor for immoral purposes," reported the Niles (MI) Daily Star. "He was arrested Wednesday at Jones and accused of picking up a 16-year-old Cassopolis boy who was hitchhiking..." By 1986, he had moved to Michigan and at the end he was living in Union, MI. He succumbed to the spectre of death on Sept. 16, 1997.

She also held a membership in the Harvest House at Holy Cross Church and attended the St. Joseph Catholic Chuch in Mishawaka. Sadly, Alexander died on Jan. 24, 1988.
