Andrew Brison Devan was born on March 21 or 25, 1851 in or near Hopwood, Fayette County, the son of John and Mary Ann (Minerd) Devan. He was only 14 years old when his father died shortly after his return from military service in the Civil War. At the age of 15, on Nov. 12, 1866, Andrew was admitted to the Uniontown Soldier's Orphans School. He was discharged from the school upon reaching his 16th birthday on March 25, 1867. He then returned home to Monroe (Hopwood).
Andrew is listed in the 1877 book Pennsylvania Soldier's Orphan Schools, by James Laughery Paul. He may have died young and has not been located on the federal censuses of 1870 or 1880. More will be added here when discovered and verified.
