Charles S. Luckey

Charles S. Luckey was born on Sept. 6, 1898 near Dawson, Fayette County, PA, the son of Joseph M. and Sara Catherine (Minerd) Luckey

As a young man, in the early-to-mid-1920s, Charles and his brother Andrew went to Wisconsin, where they found work as farm laborers, employed by their friend Ivan Cross.

On April 10, 1926, at the age of 28, Charles married 20-year-old Anna Bedi (1906-2000), daughter of Hungarian immigrants Louis and Louise (Baler) Bedi. Anna was a native of Cudahy, Milwaukee County, WI.

They produced two daughters -- Sarah Louise Francis and Dorothy Bernichio, both born in Wisconsin.

Charles and Anna spent many years in Cudahy, where Charles labored curing rubber for a tire company. When the federal census was taken in 1930, the Luckeys resided in Cudahy, with Anna's 19-year-old brother Louis Bedi boarding in their home, along with roomer and friend Ivan Cross of Iowa.

 

Charles and Anna's employer Federal Rubber Company in Cudahy, WI, where they presumably met in the early-to-mid 1920s.

 

Later, during the decade of the 1930s, they migrated to Chicago. In April 1939, when his father celebrated his 81st birthday with a family dinner, Charles as the only one of the children not to attend the affair, as reported by the Connellsville Daily Courier

At the age of 83, Charles died in Chicago on Feb. 15, 1981. Funeral services were held in the Windy City. 

Anna outlived her husband by 19 years, and resided with her married daughter Dorothy on South Richmond Street. She passed away just 16 days shy of her 94th birthday, on Oct. 1, 2000.

 

~ Daughter Sarah Louise (Luckey) Francis ~

Daughter Sarah Louise Luckey (1927- ? ) was born on Jan. 31, 1927 in Chicago.

She married Edward Harry Francis Sr. (Jan. 31, 1927-1993), a native of Chicago. Their nuptials were held in Chicago on Feb. 9, 1945.

They lived in Chicago in the early 1960s before moving to Utah.

They bore three children, Janet Marie Paxton, Edward Harry Francis Jr. and Mark Wade Francis. 

Edward Sr. died in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, UT on Aug. 20, 1993, at the age of 65. He was laid to rest in Bountiful, Davis County, UT.

Daughter Janet Marie Francis (1946- ? ) was born in 1946 in Chicago. On June 4, 1966, she was united in holy matrimony with Alan K. Paxton ( ? - ? ).

Son Edward Harry Francis Jr. (1949- ? ) was born in 1949 in Chicago. When he was 22 years of age, on April 2, 1971, he wedded Elaine Stevens (1950- ? ), daughter of Phil Eugene and Fern (Powell) Stevens. Their nuptials were held in Salt Lake City, UT. Their five offspring are Michael Edward Francis, Steven Robert Francis, Anne Michelle Francis, Christopher Paul Francis and David Charles Francis.

  • Grandson Michael Edward Francis was born in Bountiful, Davis County, UT.
  • Grandson Steven Robert Francis was born in Bountiful, Davis County, UT.
  • Granddaughter Anne Michelle Francis was born in Bountiful, Davis County, UT.
  • Grandson Christopher Paul Francis was born in Bountiful, Davis County, UT.
  • Grandson David Charles Francis was born in Bountiful, Davis County, UT.

Son Mark Wade Francis (1962- ? ) was born in 1962 in Chicago.

 

~ Daughter Dorothy (Luckey) Bernichio ~

Daughter Dorothy Luckey (1929-2004) was born on Dec. 29, 1929. 

She wed Fred P. "Speed" Bernichio (1929- ? ) on Aug. 13, 1948.

Their four children were Fred C. Bernichio, Laura Griswald, David Bernichio and Ronald Bernichio.

The Bernichios made their home for decades in Chicago.

Dorothy passed into eternity in Chicago on June 3, 2004. An obituary in the Chicago noted that her survivors included four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Interment was in Chapel Hill Garden South.

Son Fred C. Bernichio (1950- ? ) was born in 1950. He married Sherrie Clark ( ? - ? ) on Aug. 10, 1968. They produced two children -- Frederick Alan ("Sudz" or "Fred") Bernichio and Tina Hjortland. Heartache enveloped the family a week before Christmas 2007 when son Frederick was killed in a motorcycle accident.

  • Grandson Frederick Alan ("Sudz" or "Fred") Bernichio (1969-2007) was born on June 30, 1969. He made his home in New Mexico and once said, "I'm here for a good time, not a long time." He was killed in a motorcycle accident near his home on Dec. 18, 2007. An obituary published in the Chicago Sun Times reported that he was survived by a girlfriend "and any one who he ever met as he knew no stranger and made no enemy. Sudz was a remarkable person who lived life to the fullest. Each and every one of us can say we are very blessed to have known him." The family requested that friends send an ornament to his sister in Wisconsin to adorn the family Christmas tree every year, "in honor of the greatest love and loss in a person's life, the birth of a child and the death of a child."
  • Granddaughter Tina Bernichio ( ? - ? ) was born in (?). She was joined in wedlock with Dewy Hjortland ( ? - ? ). They dwlled in St. Germain, WI.

Daughter Laura Bernichio (1951- ? ) was born in 1951. She wedded John Griswald ( ? - ? ).

Son David Bernichio (1957- ? ) was born in 1957.

Son Ronald Bernichio (1959- ? ) was born in 1959.
