Sarah Elizabeth (Miner) Sprague
(1894-1919)

Sarah Elizabeth (Miner) Sprague was born on Aug. 8, 1894 (or 1895) in York Township, Carroll County, IL, the daughter of Daniel Lucas and Mary Elizabeth (Hodges) Minerd.

She grew to womanhood in Bagley, IA.

On March 16, 1916, at the age of 21, Sarah entered into marriage with 23-year-old Redfield farmer John Sprague (April 22, 1893-1959), a native of Chester, Thayer County, NE, and the son of Perry and Cynthia (Green) Sprague. Their nuptials held in Adel, IA by the hand of justice of the peace Z.N. Fidler. Sarah's sister Sabina and brother John were witnesses.

The Spragues resided in Cedar Township, Floyd County, IA, where they owned and operated a farm.

Together, the couple produced an only son, Jesse E. Sprague, born in about 1917.

Sadly, Sarah died of unknown causes in Cedar Township on March 10, 1919, after just three years of marriage.

John's widowed mother came to live with them, and they are enumerated together on the federal census of 1920.

John migrated into Charles City, IA, where he made a living as a laborer. On Aug. 18, 2926, at the age of 33, he married again to Helen Mavis (Smith) Miner (March 13, 1903-1956)), daughter of Charles and Ida (Wiggins) Smith (or John and Eliza [Dooly] Smith) of Muscatine, IA. Their wedding was conducted in Mason City, witnessed by Thelma Cramer and I.C. Hering. Is it possible that she was his former sister-in-law, Helen (Smith) Miner, ex-wife of his brother-in-law Frederick William Miner?

They resided in Cedar Township and Charles City and bore two sons of their own, Jack Dale Sprague (1928-1994) and Billie Dean Sprague (1931-1934).

Sadly, Helen passed away in her sleep at age 53 on May 4, 1956. Rev. A.C. Wegner presided over the funeral rites. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery.

John died in Charles City in 1959. Interment was in Riverside Cemetery in town.

~ Son Jesse E. Sprague ~

Son Jesse E. Sprague (1917-1965) was born on Feb. 13, 1917 in Bagley, Guthrie County, IA. He was only about two years of age when his mother died.

His home in 1935 was in Tampa County, IA, and by 1940 Jesse at age 23 had moved into the city of Chicago. He earned a living in 1940 as a plater for a wholesale lamp manufacturing firm.

On Sept. 2, 1944, Jesse was united in matrimony with Lillian Fitzgerald (1915- ? ).

Evidence suggests that the couple did not reproduce.

When the federal census enumeration was made in 1950, the Spragues lived in Chicago, with Jesse working as a foreman in a plating works. They also housed a roomer that year, Josephine McKinney.

Their final home together was in Villa Park near Chicago. The angel of death cleaved him away at the age of 48 in Chicago on Dec. 16, 1965.

Funeral rites were conducted in St. Alexander's Church. The remains were interred in Queen of Heaven Catholic Cemetery in Hillside near Chicago. A brief obituary was published in the Chicago Tribune.
