Nett-Helen Letters

Letter from Helen to Nett - Undated

Return to Index

Monday Morn. I will try to finish my letter so if I have a chance I can send it but I expect none will show up untill tomorrow when the cream man comes along. then you will not get it for a week. it looked like rain last night & this morn & the air was damp but now the sun has been shining & about cleared off. & the wind in the north, but smoky like. Will has gone to Overtons to mow. will get done there today he says. Jennie is just nearly played out. they have had hands so long . lkes girl is helping her.--he-will be at Cobles tomorrow & then after that I will have another whack at cooking for hands a few days. Then I will be so glad. we haven't killed any fried chickins yet for they was plenty bacon & beans & ham but I shall have to try & get a fry or two this week . I have two hens that have little chicks & they are doing better than our first ones did. I hope there will be lots of them come off this fall. our harvest & June apples fell off when they wasent very much larger then crabs. the dry weather caused it I guess. some that hung on was sun burnt through & through & soft as mush. & there was so many of them too. the buds are even blasted & burnt up on the lilys so there is but a few in bloom The friday before the fourth Oliver Smith got killed, was mowing got throwed off by crossing a little ditch onto the sickle. mules took fright & run off. it cut him up badly so he died. they live about six miles this side Trenton on the lower road. you will remember that All Johnson & Lola Pixler lived there. Lizzie King said Lola was very sick. that she had the consumption. I dont know whither its so or not. some of the Climax folks sung over to Sallies school the last day. Lon Hiskett has been over after our winter school. does Morts have Johns little boy with them. Sallie is going to teach at Lights over on stand up. Rosa Newcomb has a thrten pound baby. a girl. Will bought him a seersucker coat & vest. & give me his linen duster. he says to make me a dress. I have made me a cool waist. & enough.

Sam Jones' preaching gestures

Traveling gospel
 preacher Sam Jones

There was a Sam Jones camp meeting at Trenton last week on the fair grounds Saterday & yesterday was big days there. it is said there was 2500 people there Saterday to see & hear the noted Sam Jones. next month comes the Reunion. & Sells circus is there the second day of R___. there will be a grand old time. we want to go two days but one always does. We come over one & all & be with us. I got our hats of Mrs Conlon. she is just a cute as ever. mine is white straw higher crowned then my felt hat & about the same shape. only a little broader rim & trimed with the black Spanish lace that was on my dress & narrow blk satin ribbon triming runs high up on the crown one side. & Blanches must be like Kitts for its a bonnet with high up crown. loose open braid trimed with white bobinet & ties of the same under the chin. & has a white bunch of daisys on it. it was the first thing she tried on her & it suits her exact. the two was $2.25. pretty cheap was it not. & when I get her 5¢ lawn made she will be fixed. Now let me tell you I will be too. When I get my summer silk made. la de da. I am ashamed to tell you about but if I had just known then what awful bad luck was coming to us I wouldent bought a thing. I got it for 35 per yd & it will make up so pretty. I saw two almost like it the 3rd. Ema Searcy had one on & it was just lots prettier than Ett Morris $15 dress & a great deal prettier then a blk silk. it is blk & white with real fine narrow stripes & not heavy & hot. I wanted something cool but I am to poor & thin to wear lawn. I will have to get Annie D to cut & fit it for I never can myself. it will keep me humping to get it done. & I must not write any more this time for you will get tired reading it wont. it has turned off pretty warm. I am switting.

Oh Nett I am indeed sorry you & pa cant make up your minds to come up this fall. dry apples & have a good visit with us when I red of Smith & Matt being there I just felt like I wanted to be there too. & Will said if wasent so buisy harvesting we would go right down. Matt must be pretty stout to take such a long journey over the country. is it for health. I feel for little Mabel this hot weather. be careful of her for she will be bothered more or less all summer. for it was so hot when she was weaned. she must be awful good to give up her [illegible] left to make Blanche a dress. I could write more & ask lots of questions but haven’t time. my bread is light now & I must go. pa must not work hard. does he. please write soon & love to all inquiring friends. Kiss Mabel for me & yourself. As ever Sister.
