Johannes 'John' Gaumer Sr.
(1750-1799)

Johannes "John" Gaumer Sr. was born on March 12, 1750, in Macungie Township, Northampton (now Lehigh) County, PA, a twin son of Johann Dietrich and Maria "Elizabeth" (Meinert) Gaumer Sr.

At the age of eight months, he was baptized on Nov. 4, 1750, sponsored by John Mathias and Anna Elizabeth Eigner Sr. A record of the rite was kept in the papers of the Zion Union (Lehigh) Church, later known as the Zion Lehigh Evangelical Lutheran Church. His sponsors' son, Johannes Eigner, was an uncle by marriage, having wedded Johannes' aunt, Catherine Meinert.

In about 1778, when he would have been 28 years of age, Johannes married Albertina Christina Dean ( ? - ? ).

The couple produced 10 children – Johann "Richard" Gaumer, John Dietrich "Dieder" Gaumer II, Johannes "Jacob" Gaumer, Johann Henry Gaumer, Johann Adam Gaumer, Elizabeth Allen, Charles Gaumer and three unidentified daughters.

According to Gaumer family historian Myrtle (Knepper) Weniger, who researched and typed The Gaumer Family and Allied Lines, John was a Revolutionary War veteran.

The couple initially lived in Macungie Township. Later, they migrated south and then west to Oldtown, Allegany County, MD; Londonderry Township, Bedford County, PA; and Southampton Township, Somerset County, PA.

Johannes Sr. died in 1799 in Southampton Township.

Albertina’s fate is unknown.
